Business Profile: Jack Abrams, TRU Off Grid

Jack Abrams, a young entrepreneur, is the founder of TRU Off Grid, a solar and energy storage solutions company helping people live and work independently from traditional power sources. Jack represents a new generation of innovators tackling energy challenges with passion and fresh ideas.

What is TRU Off Grid all about?

At TRU Off Grid, we help people take control of their power. We supply and install high-quality lithium batteries, solar systems, and portable power stations. Our customers range from homeowners wanting energy independence to businesses needing reliable backup and even commercial clients energizing tailored field equipment. What makes us different is our hands-on approach and technical expertise. We don’t just sell products; we design systems that fit real needs and support our customers every step of the way.

Tell us a little about your journey to owning your own business.

I’ve always been into evolving technology and problem-solving. Being an outdoor enthusiast, I’ve had a big interest in sustainability for quite some time. The idea of helping people live and work off-grid, really clicked with me. I didn’t see anyone offering the kind of simple/all-in-one, reliable solutions I thought were possible. So instead of working for someone else, I decided to take the leap and build something on my own terms.

How did you go from idea to launching the business?

It started small – as in selling portable solar panels for camping accessories while also helping a few people set up self-sustaining systems. From there I started building supplier relationships, investing in inventory, and growing through word-of-mouth through trade shows and a constant online presence. There were challenges, being self- funded and managing cash flow was tough, along with learning the ins and outs of the industry to stay ahead, but I knew it was working when we started landing bigger projects and supporting repeat customers.

How has being based in Milton shaped the business?

Milton’s been a great fit. It gives us access to both urban and rural clients, and the location makes it easy to serve the GTA and beyond. The community is supportive, and we’re seeing more interest locally in renewable energy and off-grid solutions with new Provincial government incentives.

What advice would you give to other young people who want to start something of their own?

Just start. Don’t wait until you feel 100 per cent ready, you’ll never be. Start small, learn as you go, and be okay with making mistakes. Execution is the most important factor in growth. Surround yourself with supportive people and network in your industry like crazy. Lastly, stay focused on solving real problems for your customers.

What’s next for you and for TRU Off Grid?

We’re growing fast. We’ve opened a shop in Milton to better serve local customers, and we’re looking at bigger partnerships with builders, commercial clients and overall larger scale projects. The long-term goal is to establish TRU Off Grid nation wide, as the go-to solar and battery systems provider/installer, as we continue helping more people live and work without worrying about the grid!
