Business Builders: Lean Construction Services

Lean Construction Services (LCS) is a Milton-based construction company known for delivering complex projects in active industrial and manufacturing environments. Through its Lean approach, the company brings clients, consultants and trade partners together to improve planning, communication and project outcomes.

We recently caught up with the leadership team at LCS to discuss how the company has evolved, why collaboration is at the core of their approach, and what’s next for the business.

For those who may not be familiar with Lean Construction Services, what do you do and who do you help?

Lean Construction Services is a construction management and general contracting company working primarily in the food and beverage, pharmaceutical and manufacturing sectors. A lot of our work happens inside active facilities, where our clients need to keep production moving while construction is happening around them. That makes planning, communication, safety and quality especially important. We’re ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified, which reflects the systems we’ve built around quality and health and safety and the standards we bring to every project.

Our Lean approach brings the client, consultants, trade partners and our team together early so everyone understands the plan and is working toward the same goal. At the end of the day, we’re there to make complicated projects feel a little less complicated for our clients.

What inspired you to start Lean Construction Services, and what has been one of the biggest milestones or turning points in growing the business?

Our company has been around for many years, so LCS wasn’t really a traditional start-up story. The bigger story is how the business evolved as the next generation became more involved. One of our biggest turning points was asking ourselves what kind of construction company we wanted to be and how we could build projects differently. That led us to Lean Construction.

We invested in training our project leadership team and changed the way we planned, communicated, and worked with our trade partners. Eventually, we felt strongly enough about that approach to rebrand as Lean Construction Services. It was more than a name change—it represented the kind of company and culture we wanted to build for the future.

Why did you choose Milton as the place to locate and grow your company?

Milton has been a great home for us. We’re centrally located with easy access to the GTA and many of the industrial and manufacturing areas where our clients operate, allowing us to serve projects across Southern Ontario.

We’ve also been fortunate to grow alongside Milton. Even with the tremendous growth the community has experienced, it has maintained a strong local identity. It’s been a great place to build our business, develop relationships and give our team a home base that keeps us connected to our clients and community.

Looking ahead, what excites you most about the future of Lean Construction Services and the construction industry?

Construction has traditionally been a pretty siloed industry, but we’re seeing a shift toward more collaboration, with clients, consultants and contractors planning earlier and solving problems together. Technology will continue to change the industry, but we believe the biggest opportunities still come down to people—better communication, better planning and getting everyone pulling in the same direction.

For LCS, we’re excited to keep growing and taking on larger, more complex projects while holding onto the relationships, culture and personal approach that got us here.

What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever received, and how has it influenced the way you lead your company?

The best advice has really been to do what you say you’re going to do and be honest with people, especially when the conversation isn’t easy.

In construction, things don’t always go perfectly. Issues always arise, but what matters is how we deal with them. We’d much rather have a difficult conversation early than surprise someone later. Projects end, but the relationships you build can last for decades. To us, that’s one of the best measures of a successful business.
